I told you so! Or not.

The honeydo list for this week will have to wait until tomorrow, his one is too good not to share.

In every marriage there comes a time when one spouse is tempted to say to the other “I told you so!” (or something to that effect)

Today Marla and I proved to each other just how much we love each other and we both (in very quick succession) avoided the temptation to make sure the other knew that we were right all along and they were wrong.

It’s a long story, but it goes something like this…

We had gone to Stellenbosch to visit Marla’s Gran who has been in the hospital for a number of days, and had planned on stopping of at Speir for a pick-nick tea on the way home. CJ was very excited about seeing the ducks, and Marla had made a thermos full of coffee.

Unfortunately Speir has home rules about ‘private picknics’ so that plan fell apart and we ended up walking around the dam so that CJ could see some ducks.

Now there was no “I told you so moment” in that but it does lay the foundation for what was to come.

Just before we were scheduled to join the N2 to go home, Marla (who was really wanting her cup of coffee) said “let’s go and park on Boyes Drive and drink coffee. I protested “Let’s just go home and after CJ’s bath we can go with some friends to the M&B for some coffee.” (We really needed some good coffee after the disappointing offering the catering people provided at Church that morning. The volunteers at our church make better coffee than the catering company we are obliged to use at the new venue).

But I was overridden and we drove all the way from Stellenbosch to Muizenberg on the R310.

We made our way to Boyes Drive (through the Sunday-afternoon-just-been-on-the-beach-all-day traffic) and I looked for a good spot to pull over.

At this point you need to know that the sidewalk on Boyse Dr is more than large enough to accommodate a car and pedestrians at the same time, and while driving south there is no parking per se. So you kinda have to mount the curb.

Let me just say this. Don’t do it the way I did it! Not unless you plan on spending the next 20 min’s changing a tire.

A little bit to much speed (just a little mind you I am not a maniac) and the wrong angle combined with those really good looking rocks they used for the curb, resulted in a spectacular hole in the tire wall and a horrifyingly loud shhh sound.

So I changed the tire (We have a real spare not a silly ‘biscuit’), drank my cup of coffee and climbed back into the car.

“Sorry I made you drive all the way out here” was the first thing I heard. “Sorry I broke the tire” was the first thing I said.

That was it! no “Stupid fool for the way you drove the car onto the pavement.” No  “Who’s stupid idea was it to drive all the way out here.”

We had a good chuckle and immediately started arguing over who was going to drive the car to work the next day. Marla usually uses that car (because it has air-con and I love her (and I have covered parking)), but I am the guy who handles things like getting new tires (the front set, I saw when I was playing mechanic on the side of the road, needed replacing anyway).

Well who said we were perfect?

Did you do anything stupid this weekend? Something we can all laugh at?

You guys should have gone to M&B. We wanted to go to the beach for a walk yesterday but because of the mist decided to go do some shopping at Canal Walk. We could have met you there :)

As a footnote to this story. when I was getting the Tire changed. I noticed some sidewall damage to the other front tire (is it tire or tyre? a google search does not seem to clear it up).
This damage would have gone un-noticed if I had not killed the other tire. Who knows when it would have given way at high-speed on a highway.
So perhaps God has a hand to play in even our stupid moments. I think so.
