The Wonder of Kids

[I have known Phillip (twitter) for a long while, we used to work together and now we attend the same Church (Phill is my community group leader). Phil is one of the reasons I started this blog. He blogs his passion for video over here on Synaptic Light. Phil's other blog, Son of Mine, is about another passion in his life, Stephen. The theme of my blog runs a very similar course to Son of Mine so Phil and I thought a cross post would be in order. Here is Phillip's post on my blog and here is my post on his.  Enjoy]

I heard this story from my wife; Kathy, who was walking to the shops with Stephen our almost 20 month old son. It illustrates the wonder that kids find in this world – that possibly we take for granted. Here we go (with a lot of poetic license) …

wonder

Leaving the pram behind, Kathy and Stephen decided to walk the short distance to the shops in order to return a video that we had watched; “The Day the Earth stood still”. Actually, although I can vouch for the fact that Kathy was in full control, I am sure that Stephen was probably making all the calls along the way, many a parent will be nodding their heads at about this point, he he he.

All of a sudden Stephen stopped in his tracks. A short distance away was this small brown creature with a fuzzy tail almost as long as the body. Stephen just starred. He had seen this creature before; we had pointed it out to him on numerous occasions, but this time something was different. Maybe it was the closeness of the little creature. After fidgeting around for a few moments in amongst the leaves it noticed Stephen. The creature scurried up a nearby tree and raced up to a higher and safer perch. Stephen watched it, his head angling up and up as the creature moved higher until he lost his balance and fell back onto his bottom. Perhaps it was momentum or part of the fun, but Stephen slowly – almost in slow motion – continued to fall onto his back. There he lay looking up into the tree, still trying to keep track of the escaping squirrel! Kathy watched on and could not stop laughing!

Isn’t it amazing how kids can get so amazed by the smallest of things – things we often take for granted.

Has your child been caught in a moment of amazement?

aint that kid cute or what?

you know yesterday Stephen was outside with Kathy when the thunder started. He got such a fright and sat on Kathy’s for a long time watching TV, not moving.

When I came home Stephen told me what happened; pointing outside he said “BWOING” while jerking his closed hand down.

Apparently he tried to explain the incident to as many people as possible, as often as possible.

Thunder can be frightening to an almost 20mth old but also quite intriguing.

My 20 month old is daily amazed- the fact that a peg opens and closes, a snail, a bird, leaves blowing in the wind… The one that still makes me laugh though happened about 2 months ago. I was preparing supper and grabbed a can of tomatoes from the cupboard. I happened to open it right in front of him, on his high chair. There was a sudden gasp of amazement. Did you know that there was actually something hiding inside the tin? To this day, I still hear excited chatter every time another can is opened! May life always be such an adventure!
