It is really not that bad

I stumbled across a new blog today. New as in new to me and new as in it got started on the 14th (just this last Saturday).

Cath5911 is here in Cape Town doing some volunteer work. I’m not quite sure what kind of work as she does not elaborate.

The first couple of blog posts started as she got off the plane and arrived at ‘home-base’ and did some typically touristy things yesterday.

I’m going to read the updates she makes over the next while just to get a fresh perspective on this amazing city in which I live.

I found it interesting that she states that “It is very sad to think that this beautiful place is one of the most dangerous cities in the world.” And while the level of crime is unacceptably high (don’t we all wish we could live in a crime free environment), I though Miami was the murder-by-firearm capital of the world, but I don’t hear people saying similar things about that city (Not that Miami holds a candle to Cape Town in terms of beauty, and yes I have been there, and no the water is not as blue as the colour filters they use on CSI makes it look). Or perhaps she was referring to the quality of our driving, in which case Cath I agree 100%, there are a bunch of maniacs on our roads.

So Cath I wish you well. I hope you have an amazing time in Cape Town. But I suspect that the scare stories you have been told have been embellished a bit by the organisation you are traveling with to avoid even a hint of bad press. That said it does pay to be vigilant, just make sure they take you to see the lights in Cape Town over the Christmas season even though it will be after dark.

    Hi Ron,

Thank you for reading my blog and for your post. As you know, I am new to blogging and aimed it mainly to the family and friends back home who know all about this project. I will try to add more info in the next few days and give a bit of background. It is nice to hear the views of someone living in this city. A city where I have only spent 3 days but which I love already.

    Cath

      Hi Cath
I think I will put this on your blog cause I’m not sure if you will be back to see it :)
Don’t change your blogging especially for me :) I assumed that, as you said, you were writing mainly for friends and family. I hope you don’t mind me popping in. It is always great to see someone else’s perspective on things that might otherwise become to familiar. The church I belong to host a group from the US about once a year when they come out to do some work with Metro Kids in the townships. It is always inspiring to see people (like yourself) come so far to help out with something that is on my own doorstep.
I hope this time is a special one for you and the rest of the team you are working with, and that the effects of your stay will last even longer.
