On the night stand

Ok I actually call the thing a “bed-side table” even though it is more like a cabinet.

Usually you can tell a bit about someone from what hey leave lying around their house; so I thought I would share with you all what is on my night stand.

Creative Writing – What bothers you?

That picture is a photo of a page from my Standard 1 Creative Writing book. My mom and I were talking the other day about writing in general. I told her a quote I heard in a movie that was otherwise completely void of anything substantial. The characters were talking about Writers and why they write. One of them said ” because they have a truth to tell”.

Of Elephants

Yesterday, while trying to figure out how to spell Phalaborwa, I was reminded of a particular elephant I had the pleasure of meeting way back in 1993 whilst doing my National Service at 7SAI.

I Googled “7SAI” and did find the correct spelling for the name of the town where the Unit had its HQ. I also came across a site where someone has recorded a small number of stories that had been written by people about their own National Service.

One in particular made me laugh, but not in the way the writer had intended. The story (you can read it here) revolves around a mischievous nursing sister who placed a “huge elephant dung deposit” on one of the bases roads after she retrieved it from the Kruger Park which is situated right next door to the base. And how, after they watered it to give it a bit more of an authentic feel, someone drove car tracks of elephant dung throughout the place messing up the usually pristine roads.

The result was that the RSM (Regimental Segregant Major, the guy who shouts a lot) spent a number of hours driving around looking for the missing elephant and investigating how the beast entered into his domain.

Job board

Apparently the second most important thing about a person is the job they do. Right? Isn’t that always how it goes when you meet someone new, the first question you ask (or the first thing you find out about them) is “what is your name?” And the second is “What do you do for a living?” or something along those lines.

And if our job’s define who we are, then it would be interesting to think about all the jobs we have ever done.

Catching Up

Not a long post today, but I felt I needed to give a bit of an explanation to all of my avid followers (that includes you Mom ;) ), as to why I have been away for so long (2 weeks is a long time when my stated aim is 3 post a week).

The fact of the matter is that the cord of the power supply to the laptop I use at home was broken and I only got it repaired this weekend (thanks Gareth). I know that does not make me completely internet less but I took the opportunity to unplug from all things computer at home for the past 2 weeks. But I have a message for church to prepare for next month so I needed the power cable fixed and Gareth did a quick soldering job and I am back in business (a new power supply would have probably cost me in the region of R1000 so I guess I owe Gareth a few lunches.

As to how the power supply got broken, well that is a whole other blog post which may or may not actually get written. So before I go, a quick rundown of the past 2 weeks events.

All the single ladies Tolkien style

After yesterdays post I thought I would keep the theme going for a while.

If you are not a Tolkien fan then this one may well go right over your head with a loud whooshing sound not unlike the sound an orc hears just before Gimli’s axe takes it’s head off.

This xkcd.com cartoon came through my reader yesterday. I laughed for about half an hour straight.

Who else thought that was funny?

I want one!

I really want to get a sign like this one. It won’t be much of a deterrent as only the educated burglars would understand it and they would probably end up stealing it.

On Marriage

This morning (yesterday morning by the time this is published) on the way to work I heard a couple of conversations between a radio DJ and some people who called in. They were talking about marriage. I don’t really know what the context was but one of the callers said something along the lines of “you should stay together for about 5 years before you get married. That way you know each others bad habits and you know if you can handle them.”

So I thought I would share some of my thoughts on the matter with you my loyal readers (all 2 of you :) )

Some Love questions (and answers) for February

Matt over at the church of no people (almost) finished of the month of February with his answers to five questions about love, dating, meeting the right girl etc. I thought I would follow his example and close out the month of love by answering those same 5 4 (decided to drop one) questions.

So here goes.
